Södermalm 30/11/14

Went for the Söder free tour (literally "South") with Josh (Songen joined later) and got to know more about this hippy, bohemian part of Stockholm (promoted as the "alternate" side) that used to be the poorest region in the capital (today, rents here are one of the highest in Scandinavia; read: one of the highest in the world, bar Singapore and Hongkong).

Not a particularly nice photo but look, SUNRAY!

Did you know that the freedom and openness Swedish society enjoys today was pushed by insurance companies that didn't want LGBTQ to be labelled as "sick" cos that means they'll be entitled to 80% of their wages for being "sick"?

Did you know that the company that created Battlefield came from this part of Sweden and used to have an office in a garage (sounds familiar, so many of such stories, and yes, today they sit atop the highest floor in Södermalm with a nice view of Gamla Stan; not that I play or have even seen the game before, so yea, I didn't contribute to their success)? In fact, many rag-to-rich stories here apparently (the whole island is a rag to rich story actually).

Did you know that mothers used to fear kids here due to the Witch Trial incidents where kids were thought to not lie and always tell the truth and the government stupidly believe whatever they say, including random finger-pointing at women accusing them of witchcraft in exchange of bribes (scheming kids... makes you wonder about human nature doesn't it?)? Interestingly, it's illegal to hit any kid, even your own children, here in Stockholm (apparently someone from KL got jailed for 3 weeks here cos he slapped his kid... Not sure if it's just stories made up to impose racial stereotype on Asian Tiger mums/dads).

Did you know there's a school and a street named after an executioner (who was subsequently executed by his apprentice)? Why, just why?...

Then we did some Latte Papa Bingo game (count number of dads with trolley of kids without presence of mum, typically holding a cup of latte in hand). Spotted a few and yes, the guide made his point that gender equality is pretty much a norm here in Sweden (reminds me of a post on 9Gag about a Swedish bar having a sign that says "Man with no clothes = no service; woman with no clothes = free drink"... Now tell me how is that ever gonna be equal?)

Fika with Songen after the tour at Cafe Lazy House (serves nice Apple pie!) as Josh went back to complete his lab report:

Then bought groceries from oriental market before cooking with Song and dinnering together with his German friend!

Pretty awesome Chinese food especially the pork BUT his friend doesn't eat Asian food! So most of the rice ended up with him... Poor thing haha

Then it was study and boring stuff... Still, a pretty nice day out!
